Travel - What's the public transport like on the islands?

Transportation

Local public transport is provided on islands by Alugers, some are like mini-buses and others are trucks with fixed benched seating on the back, you are open to the elements on the back of a truck so prepare for the effects of the wind and sun. Seat belts are not always fitted or working in mini buses and there are no seat belts for those travelling on the back of a truck.

Usually the Alugers act as 'Collectives' picking up people and dropping them off along different routes for a fee. Taxi's also operate on the islands. Always agree the price or find out what the price is before ordering a taxi or getting in an Aluger or Taxi, then agree a fixed rate with the driver.

Alugers are also used by some to take tourists on island tours. Some taxi drivers will also provide a tour using their taxi.

Some tour operators will use enclosed vehicles for island tours.

You can pre-arrange to hire a vehicle during your stay.

There is also quad, scooter and bicyle hire available. Other forms of road transport are being introduced like Segway's Personal Transporters.  Some islands will have fewer types of transportation vehicles than others.
